Compact Intermediate Breakdown

The Compact Intermediate was designed for ultimate stealth and versatility.

We designed this line with an overly aggressive, clear intermediate head featuring a short 20 ft. body. The compact body paired with a short 3 ft. front taper easily turns over large air resistant flies in heavy wind. The short 3 ft. back taper helps load this line quickly with minimal false casting. This dual colored line features a monofilament core with our signature Shooting Technology to keep your line remaining slick, supple and fast shooting. The clear and light blue color combination distinguishes taper change and identifies loading point.

The Compact Intermediate is one of our most versatile lines for a variety of species and conditions. Aggresive taper to turn over any size fly featuring a stealthy clear head.

FAQ

Our Compact Intermediate fly line is built for both medium and warm water environments. This line will perform best in temperatures between 50 and 70+ degrees (F).

The taper design for our Compact Intermediate was built overly aggressive to cast large flies, punch through wind and deliver flies where they need to go despite the conditions. The short body and short rear taper allows for minimal false casts while achieving maximum distance. The short front taper will turn over any large fly or weighted pattern with ease. This line is built overweighted for quick loading and fast shooting.

The clear and light blue color combination distinguishes taper change and proper loading point. The clear head paired with the light blue running line is extremely stealthy and blends in with a variety of water types.

Cleaning your fly line is very important especially when fishing saltwater. Simply pull line off your reel into a clean bucket or tub of freshwater. Put roughly 1oz or more of Cortland’s Line Cleaner solution onto a clean rag or towel. Firmly squeeze the towel with Pro Line Cleaner around the line and slowly pull line through the towel. You should be able to see dirt or discolored streaks on the towel when finished.

I am nearly 75 and just don't have the strength and response that I used to. I was looking for a line to pursue large pike and musky with large flies. After test casting this line with a fast 10wt rod and found that it was smooth flowing and quick to load, few back casts, one or two with the head beyond the rod tip. I could cast large 10", wind resistant streamers to 80', which is good for me. I can see making 50' to 60' casts with large flies all day with little arm fatigue.

My favourite coho line

Been use this line, for the last 3 years. It’s has now taken the place of the ghost tip, for most of my coho salmon fishing. I fish both salt and fresh water with it. It is by far my favourite casting line. Would highly recommended, as I have already to my people.

In fly fishing, adaptability is the key to success. Conditions change, species vary, and the water presents new challenges on every outing. You need a line that can keep up, one that performs just as well in a temperate trout stream as it does on a tropical flat. The Specialty Series Compact Intermediate is engineered to be that line—our most versatile intermediate offering, designed for the angler who refuses to be limited by location or target species. Whether you're presenting a streamer to a wary brown trout, casting into a blitz of false albacore, or exploring remote jungle waters, this line provides the stealth and performance needed to make the crucial shot. It is the ultimate utility player for your fly fishing arsenal.

Quick Loading, Effortless Casting

The core of the Compact Intermediate’s design is its 26-foot, full clear head. This condensed, aggressive taper is built to load modern, fast-action rods with minimal effort. You can feel the rod load instantly, allowing for rapid, accurate casts with very few false casts. This efficiency is critical when sight-fishing or reacting to fast-moving fish, where the window of opportunity is often just a few seconds long. The clear head provides a significant stealth advantage, minimizing the line's visibility to fish in clear water and fooling even the most cautious predators.

Behind the powerful head, a floating running line ensures smooth line management and easy pickups from the water. This combination of an intermediate head and a floating running line gives you incredible control over your fly's depth, letting you hover it just below the surface or in the crucial top few feet of the water column where many species feed.

Advanced Technology for Superior Performance

A truly great fly line is more than just a taper. The Compact Intermediate is packed with our most advanced technologies to ensure it excels in any environment. Our signature ST coating creates a glass-smooth, super-slick finish that glides through the rod guides with minimal friction. This, combined with our Heat-Tempered Surface Treatment, seals the line from dirt, algae, and oils, maintaining its exceptional performance and slickness all season long. You get longer, smoother casts with less effort. Built on a durable monofilament core, this line is ready for action in both freshwater and saltwater. It also boasts incredible temperature versatility, performing flawlessly in warm conditions (50°F to 70°F) and even in tropical heat (70°F+). From northern pike and steelhead to striped bass and jungle species, this line can handle it all. Rigging is made simple and reliable with our strong, durable Dual Welded Loops on both ends, allowing for fast and easy leader connections without the bulk of traditional knots.
