FAQ

Our Salmon Steelhead fly line is built for cold water environments and will perform best in temperatures between 30 and 70 degrees (F).

The taper design for our Salmon Steelhead fly line was built with an extended body and extended rear taper for line control and mending at distance. The 6' front taper effortlessly turns over nymph rigs and streamers. This line is built a full line size heavy to load fast modern action rods in close quarters or at distance.

The olive and white color change helps track casting distance and identify optimal pick up and shooting points. These colors are stealthy yet traceable in freshwater environments.

Cleaning your fly line is very important especially when fishing saltwater. Simply pull line off your reel into a clean bucket or tub of freshwater. Put roughly 1oz or more of Cortland’s Line Cleaner solution onto a clean rag or towel. Firmly squeeze the towel with Pro Line Cleaner around the line and slowly pull line through the towel. You should be able to see dirt or discolored streaks on the towel when finished.

The Ultimate Tool for Line Control and Presentation | Cortland Line

The pursuit of salmon and steelhead is a game of precision, patience, and perfect presentation. Whether you are swinging a streamer through a broad run, dead-drifting a nymph rig under an indicator, or roll casting in tight quarters, line control is everything. The Salmon Steelhead line is specifically engineered for the dedicated anadromous angler, providing the authority and finesse needed to manage your drift and turn over heavy, complex setups with ease.

This is not just another floating line; it is a purpose-built tool designed to master the mend. When you see the flash of a chrome steelhead or feel the subtle take of a salmon, you need a line that has already done the hard work for you.

Long Belly Power for Effortless Mending

The heart of this line is its unique long belly taper and extended 65-foot head. This design provides unparalleled stability on the water, allowing you to perform long, precise mends without disturbing your fly's path. You can easily lift large sections of line to reposition your drift, combat tricky currents, and achieve the perfect swing. This extended head also makes roll casting and single-hand spey casting incredibly efficient, giving you the ability to cover water effectively even when backcasting room is limited.

At the front, a short, aggressive taper and an over-weighted head provide the raw power needed to turn over heavy nymph rigs, bulky indicators, split shot, and large streamers. You will no longer struggle with casts that collapse under the weight of your terminal tackle. Instead, you will feel the direct transfer of energy that punches your rig out to the target with authority, giving you the confidence to fish any setup the conditions demand.

High Floating, All-Weather Performance

A line that sinks at the tip can ruin a perfect drift. The Salmon Steelhead line is designed to float high on the surface, from the tip to the running line, ensuring a drag-free presentation and making it easy to see subtle takes on an indicator. This high-floating characteristic is crucial for effective mending and line management in complex currents.

Built on a durable braided nylon multifilament core, this line is ready to perform in the often-challenging conditions of salmon and steelhead season. It remains supple and manageable in both cold (30-50°F) and warmer (50-70°F) temperatures, so you can count on it from the frigid days of winter steelheading to the milder weather of the fall salmon run. Our signature ST coating delivers a slick, reduced-friction performance, helping you shoot line farther while protecting it from the rigors of a long season. For convenience and strength, we’ve included our reliable Dual Welded Loops for fast and easy rigging.
